The Town Hall 18 (TH18) introduces one of the most significant changes to the defensive system in Clash of Clans. At this level, the Town Hall no longer has its own weapon and instead relies on a Guardian, a selectable defensive unit that defines how the core of the base behaves.

Choosing between Smasher and Longshot means adopting a different defensive approach, which directly impacts performance against various types of attacks.

A new defensive system: how Guardians work

At TH18, Guardians completely replace the Town Hall’s weapon. Only one can be active at a time, and its role is to protect the central area of the village.

Unlike other defenses, these Guardians are not static structures. They act as active units that patrol around the Town Hall and automatically attack when enemy troops enter their range.

  • They can attack both ground and air units.
  • They activate automatically during defense.
  • They can be upgraded independently.
  • They do not participate in attacks.

Smasher: direct pressure and core resistance

The Smasher Guardian is designed for close-range combat. Its goal is to withstand, slow down, and punish enemy troops when they reach the center of the base. Its short-range attack includes area damage, allowing it to hit multiple units at once.

  • Its damage increases when the Town Hall is destroyed.
  • Upon death, it leaves a Rage effect that boosts nearby defenses.

This means that even after being eliminated, it continues to provide defensive value. It is most effective in closed bases or compact cores, where enemy troops are forced into high-pressure zones.

Longshot: long-range control and gradual damage

The Longshot Guardian takes a different approach, focusing on long-range attacks. Its main role is to weaken troops before they reach the core. It deals area damage and has extended range, allowing it to attack from safer positions.

  • Deals consistent damage from a distance.
  • Upon death, it creates an explosion that damages nearby troops.

This behavior makes it an effective option against mass attacks or strategies based on grouped troop deployments.

Direct comparison between Smasher and Longshot

Both Guardians fulfill different roles in defense:

  • Smasher: close combat, high damage, and core control.
  • Longshot: long range, pre-damage, and crowd control.

In practical terms:

  • Smasher works better against structured attacks and slow pushes.
  • Longshot is more effective against spam or mass deployments.

Which Guardian to choose based on your base type

The choice depends on the base design and the most common types of attacks.

Smasher is recommended for:

  • Closed or “box” bases.
  • Compact cores.
  • Strategies focused on running out the attack timer.

Longshot is recommended for:

  • Open or spread-out bases.
  • Anti-spam designs.
  • Gradual damage strategies.
