Season 88, also known as Shocktober, just dropped a massive shakeup into the meta. The October 6 patch hit the servers with 8 buffs, 7 nerfs, and 1 rework that completely flipped the dominant win conditions. If you're stuck on the ladder, it's time to tweak your strategy.

The spotlight this month is on the tower-takers. Cards like the Lava Hound and Goblin Barrel got some serious upgrades, while last month's heavy hitters like the Minion Giant or Hero Ice Wizard took critical hits. Here is a straight-to-the-point breakdown of the best decks crushing the arenas right now and how to pilot them under the current 1 Evolution, 1 Hero, 1 Wild rule.

Clash Royale October balance changes

To understand why some decks are suddenly top-tier, we have to look at the math. The most brutal buff went to the Lava Hound. Its base damage skyrocketed by +33% (from 53 to 71 damage). Even though its hit speed was slowed to 1.5s, that still means a solid 16% increase in raw damage per second.

On the flip side, the Goblin Barrel now lands its first strike in 0.3s (down from 0.4s), making it punishingly fast if your opponent reacts late with a spell. Looking at the nerfs, the Hero Ice Wizard lost a massive -49% of its freeze damage, meaning it can no longer wipe out Skeletons or Bats. The Barbarian Barrel also lost -8% of its damage, so it is no longer a perfect counter to Wall Breakers.

Best meta decks right now

These are the most consistent builds for pushing trophies this month. Make sure to get some practice in before jumping straight into Ranked.

1. Goblin Barrel Log Bait (3.3 Elixir)

  • Cards: Goblin Barrel (Evolution), Princess, Goblin Gang, Knight, Inferno Tower, Ice Spirit, The Log, Rocket. The classic bait archetype is back on top. With the Barbarian Barrel hitting softer and the Goblin Barrel stabbing faster, this deck punishes anyone who burns their small spell. Keep the Inferno Tower handy for heavy tanks and cycle your goblins smart.

2. LavaLoon (4.0 Elixir)

  • Cards: Lava Hound, Balloon, Mega Minion, Minions, Inferno Dragon, Tombstone, Arrows, Fireball. The massive hound buff brought this deck roaring back. The Lava Hound now deals enough damage on its own that opponents can't afford to ignore it. Drop it in the back during double elixir, back it up with the Balloon, and clear air defenses with Fireball or Arrows.

3. X-Bow 3.0 (3.0 Elixir)

  • Cards: X-Bow, Tesla, Archers, Knight, Ice Spirit, Skeletons, Fireball, The Log. The X-Bow got a modest +4% damage buff (from 58 to 61), but in siege decks, every tick of damage matters. Plant your bow, defend it with your life using Tesla and Knight, and cycle fast. Keep in mind that Skeletons now spawn closer together, so place them carefully to avoid splash damage wiping them all out instantly.

4. Battle Ram Bridge Spam

  • Cards: Battle Ram (Evolution), Royal Ghost (Evolution), Golden Knight, Bandit, Electro Wizard, Furnace, Ronin, Arrows. This list is all about punishing mistakes. You use the Bandit and Golden Knight to force action in both lanes while the Battle Ram threatens the towers directly. If you'd rather run the Hero Electro Wizard in your hero slot, swap out the Golden Knight for Wall Breakers, which also scored a +7% damage buff this month.

5. Hog Earthquake Cycle (2.8 Elixir)

  • Cards: Hog Rider, Earthquake, Firecracker (Evolution), Tesla (Evolution), Mighty Miner, Skeletons, Electro Spirit, Barbarian Barrel. A super consistent pick. Tear down defensive buildings with the Earthquake so your Hog Rider can connect. It’s an insanely fast deck that barely felt the October nerfs, making it a reliable climber for most players.

Nerfed but viable options

  • Minion Giant Cycle (2.9 Elixir)

    • Cards: Rune Giant, Minion Giant, Bats (Evolution), Cannon (Evolution), Little Prince, Skeletons, Barbarian Barrel, Poison. Even though the Minion Giant attack speed dropped from 1.5s to 1.7s, and both the evo cannon and barrel got trimmed, it's still decent if you already know the rotations. I wouldn't recommend picking it up fresh right now, but you don't have to throw it away if it's already maxed.
  • Golem Beatdown

    • Cards: Golem, Elite Barbarians (Evolution), Electro Dragon (Evolution), Hero Berserker, Skeleton Dragons, Tornado, Barbarian Barrel, Elixir Collector. The Elixir Collector was heavily adjusted. It now lasts 1m 50s but produces elixir every 15s instead of 13s. Your initial investment takes much longer to pay off. Only drop the collector when you know the enemy can't punish you, and build those massive Golem pushes patiently.

Best free to play deck

If you're not looking to drain your gold maxing out legendaries, this is your best shot at competing on a budget.

Hog 2.6 Cycle (2.6 Elixir)

  • Cards: Hog Rider, Musketeer, Ice Golem, Cannon, Skeletons, Ice Spirit, Fireball, The Log. This setup has been proving itself for years. 7 out of the 8 cards are Commons or Rares, making them infinitely easier to collect than a full legendary deck. It relies heavily on deployment timing rather than just raw card levels.

According to recent win rate data from RoyaleAPI, picking the right deck comes down to your personal playstyle. The win rate gap between these options is just a few percent; your actual mechanical skill is what closes out the games. Keep in mind that the Ranked requirement is 13,500 trophies for October, jumping to 14,000 in November. Lock in your deck and go get those crowns!
