Fortnite Save the World returns as free-to-play on April 16. Save the World — Fortnite’s original PvE survival/co-op mode — is finally opening to almost all players, renewing interest in the nine-year-old mode and giving fans a reason to revisit Fortnite’s roots.
Fortnite Save the World will become free-to-play on April 16, 2026. The mode previously required a Starter Pack purchase; Epic reversed course and will make it accessible without that purchase on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and cloud services like GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna. Mobile devices and the original Nintendo Switch will not support the mode.

Epic opened preregistration on the Save the World site with community milestones: cosmetic rewards (stickers, sprays) and a Save the World–specific Snowstrike hero once goals are hit. Current players will receive a set of thank-you rewards (superchargers, vouchers, gold) on April 16.
Save the World is the mode that started Fortnite in 2011 and launched in early access in 2017. Making it free restores easier access to Fortnite’s coop, story, and crafting content and may bring more players back to PvE gameplay just as Epic adjusts Battle Royale currency and Battle Pass economics.
Save the World’s free relaunch on April 16 is a clear invitation to both veterans and newcomers: will you jump back in to defend objectives and craft legendary gear? The preregistration rewards and platform availability make this relaunch easy to try.
Will Save the World’s free return change how you play Fortnite?
