Meta introduced a new family of AI-powered smart glasses and sent a clear message to the market: it wants wearables to stop being an experiment tied to luxury and become a mass-consumer category.
Mark Zuckerberg’s company announced three proprietary models, Adventurer, Fury and Starfire, without the visible backing of traditional eyewear brands such as Ray-Ban or Oakley. The shift is not minor. Meta is trying to build a direct hardware identity, with more accessible prices and a proposal centered on Meta AI.
The new line consists of three smart glasses models: Adventurer, Fury and Starfire. According to the information presented by the company, all of them integrate a 12-megapixel camera, 3K video recording, microphones for voice commands and direct access to the Meta AI virtual assistant.
The bet combines content capture, voice assistance and real-time queries from a device worn on the face. In other words, Meta wants to bring AI closer to a more natural interface than the phone: looking, asking, recording and receiving answers without taking a screen out of your pocket.
The Starfire model adds another element: it was designed in collaboration with Kylie Jenner, with finishes and details aimed at audiences interested in fashion. It is a relevant move because it shows that Meta is not only thinking about technology, but also about purchase desire, style and cultural adoption.
The most important part of the announcement may not be the camera or the resolution, but the price. The new glasses start at $299, a more competitive figure compared to previous generations linked to luxury brands.
Meta seems to have understood that smart glasses adoption depends on three factors: clear usefulness, acceptable design and an attainable price. If one of those three elements fails, the product risks being limited to tech enthusiasts or niche buyers.
With this proprietary line, the company seeks to control more parts of the experience: design, brand, AI integration, distribution and positioning. It is the kind of move a company makes when it stops testing a category and starts trying to dominate it.
In recent years, the conversation around Artificial Intelligence has focused mainly on applications, chatbots, generative models and enterprise software. But the next battlefield may be the interface: the way people connect with those systems throughout the day.
Smart glasses are aimed precisely at that space. They do not immediately replace the phone, but they can begin to take over certain tasks: taking a photo, recording a moment, asking for quick information, listening to music or checking something without interrupting the user’s physical or social activity as much.
For Meta, this also has a strategic reading. The company has been investing for years in augmented reality, virtual reality, social networks, assistants and AI models. Smart glasses can act as a more realistic bridge between the present of the smartphone and a future where computing is more ambient, contextual and less dependent on traditional screens.
The problem is that wearing a camera, microphones and an AI assistant on the face raises questions that go beyond hardware. Privacy returns to the center of the debate, especially when the device can capture images and process commands in everyday situations.
Meta said it added software and hardware mechanisms to detect attempts to manipulate the cameras. It also indicated that this generation of smart glasses will not include facial recognition features in the short term.
That point will be key to public trust. Mass adoption will not depend only on what the glasses can do, but on how much control users and the people around them feel they have.
Every new generation of smart devices reopens a familiar tension: more convenience in exchange for more data. In the case of glasses, that tension becomes more visible because the camera is not on a table or in a hand, but on the user’s face.
This changes social perception. A person recording with a phone is usually easy to identify. A person wearing smart glasses can raise subtler questions: whether they are recording, listening, checking information or simply wearing regular glasses.
That is why the real challenge for Meta will be designing clear signals, simple rules and understandable controls. The technology may be ready before the social norms it needs to be accepted.
The launch shows an increasingly clear direction in the industry: AI will not live only inside applications, but inside everyday objects. Glasses, headphones, watches, cars and home devices are beginning to become access points for intelligent assistants.
Meta has obvious advantages: global scale, experience in social networks, investment in AI and the ability to build hardware and software ecosystems. But it also carries a complex history around privacy, personal data and public trust.
The real question is not whether smart glasses can do more things. The question is whether Meta can convince millions of people that wearing AI on the face is useful, safe and socially acceptable.
If it succeeds, this launch could mark an important step in the transition of AI from the desktop and the phone toward a more constant presence in daily life. If it fails, it will be another reminder that wearable technology needs more than good specifications: it needs trust.
Meta’s smart glasses show where the next stage of AI is heading: systems that are less visible, closer to context and available in moments when opening an application may be inconvenient.
But that convenience must be built responsibly. Wearable AI can help people work better, access information with less friction and capture experiences in a more natural way. It can also create new tensions around privacy, consent and limits in shared spaces.
The opportunity is not in filling everyday life with sensors, but in designing technology that respects people while expanding their capabilities. Real adoption will come when usefulness is clear and trust is not a promise, but a feature of the product.
