The native version of Minecraft for the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially happening and will arrive later this year with a massive graphical upgrade. If you've already spent hundreds of hours mining blocks and building bases on the current console, get ready because the experience is about to get a huge quality jump.

According to coverage from Vandal and the official Nintendo Direct broadcast, Mojang confirmed that the game won't just be a simple port, but an experience specifically designed to take full advantage of the new hardware's capabilities. This means the overall performance of the game should feel a lot smoother on the new platform.

The biggest addition to this edition is that it will feature the Vibrant Visuals update right out of the box. This graphical leap, introduced in 2025, completely overhauls the classic blocky look we've all grown used to. It's a change the community has been requesting for console versions for quite a while now.

We're talking about advanced visual effects like volumetric fog, directional lighting, and dynamic shadows that shift as the sun moves across the sky. On top of that, water rendering and skyboxes will have a spectacular level of detail that makes your Minecraft world feel incredibly immersive and alive. Late nights exploring caves and sunsets over your farms are going to have a totally different vibe.

It isn't just the base game getting a much-needed facelift, either. The fan-favorite Super Mario Mash-Up DLC will also benefit from these visual enhancements. If you ever wanted to wander around Peach's Castle or the iconic Delfino Plaza with proper, realistic lighting, this is undoubtedly going to be the perfect way to do it.

This exclusive pack, limited to Nintendo consoles, features original music, unique skins for your avatar, and environment textures based on Super Mario Bros., effectively turning your survival map into a perfect tribute to the Japanese company's classics. The fact that Mojang bothered to update this specific content to match the new visual standard shows they want to deliver a comprehensive experience from the very first day you install the game.

Release window for the new console

We don't have an exact calendar day yet, but the release is locked in for sometime this year. If you were already planning on making the jump to the Nintendo Switch 2, getting your creative world or survival base up and running with next-gen graphics is a pretty solid reason to boot it up.

With the console's upcoming lineup starting to take shape, having a heavy hitter like Minecraft ready to showcase the new hardware's technical capabilities is a strong start. Now we just have to wait a little bit longer to see these technical showcases running on our own screens, but the future looks incredibly bright for those of us who love handheld gaming.
