Bandai Namco released a free update for DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO that significantly changed one specific aspect of the game: defense. For months, part of the competitive community had found ways to turn defensive mechanics such as Super Perception and Z-Counters into nearly automatic reactions by relying on controller configurations and peripherals that minimized the margin of error.

With this update, that margin once again depends on player skill. Here's a closer look at what changed and what it means for players looking to adapt their playstyle.
Since the game's launch in October 2024, defending in Sparking! ZERO has been just as important as attacking. The combat system offers several layers of defense: basic guarding, Super Perception (which can deflect Ki Blasts and projectiles), Z-Counters (used to respond to enemy teleports), and Super Counters, among others.
Each mechanic has its own Ki cost and timing window for successful execution.

The issue emerged when some players began using modified controllers or custom configurations to chain defensive actions at speeds that were nearly impossible to replicate manually. The result was a series of matches where defensive exchanges repeated endlessly without requiring genuine reads or reactions from the players involved.
The update directly targets these mechanics by adjusting the parameters that made them so effective.
Let's start with the mechanic most affected by the update. Previously, using Super Perception against a Ki Blast or projectile was almost a "free" option: it deflected the attack while also granting a stat boost to the character.
After the update, that stat boost has been removed, and a major side effect has been added: successfully using Super Perception against Ki Blasts or projectiles now automatically activates Sparking! Mode.
This completely changes the risk-reward calculation. Activating Sparking! Mode is no longer just an offensive advantage that players can trigger at will; it can now occur as a side effect of defensive play.
In addition, there is now a longer cooldown before another Smash Ki Blast can be used, making long-range Ki Blast spam less effective.
Rush attacks and charge attacks, including combo strings, also received several notable adjustments that move in different directions.
On one hand, a frustrating interaction was fixed. Previously, if a player was charging an attack and got hit by a rush attack or a Sparking! rush Ki Blast, they would suffer an involuntary knockback.

That knockback no longer occurs, making charged attacks during Sparking! Mode much more reliable. On the other hand, rush attacks and melee strikes now deal less damage, and missing them results in a longer recovery period before players can act again.
Additionally, receiving melee hits now causes more damage overall. As a result, throwing out attacks without a clear opening has become significantly riskier.
Perhaps the most important change for defensive timing is this: activating Sparking! Mode—whether manually by filling the Ki gauge or automatically through Super Perception—now temporarily reduces the character's defense for a specific period after activation.
To help players track this effect, a new on-screen icon appears while the defense reduction is active.
There is another important consequence: if a player is hit by a Super Counter during this vulnerability window, Sparking! Mode ends immediately. To compensate for these new risks, Sparking! Mode also received several buffs:
Another easily overlooked change with a significant competitive impact is the new restriction based on Combat Power (DP).
Following the update, certain defensive functions during Sparking! Mode are now only available to characters with a DP rating of 7 or higher.
In practice, this means lower-powered characters can no longer rely on these mechanics to compensate for weaker offensive capabilities.
A common competitive strategy involved repeatedly backing away with short dashes while waiting for Ki recovery or a better counterattack opportunity.
The update reduces backward short-dash speed and also lowers overall Ki recovery speed.

The result is that passive defensive play now requires more time and resources than before. The update also reduces the maximum number of reserve skill stocks and includes health adjustments for several characters.
Beyond combat balance, the update includes several technical fixes aimed at improving the overall gameplay experience.
With all these changes in place, the update encourages players to make more deliberate decisions during key moments of a match.
