The highly anticipated early access launch of Subnautica 2 has forced Square Glade Games to move their indie survival game, Outbound, to May 11. This tactical shift to avoid competing with a genre titan highlights what the community calls the "Silksong effect" on Steam.
Originally planned for a simultaneous release, Outbound—an independent game focused on survival and exploration in a camper van—had to recalculate its route.

To understand this trend, we just have to look back at what happened with long-awaited giants like Hollow Knight: Silksong or Slay the Spire 2. When these massive games drop a date, many smaller studios prefer to push back or bring forward their launches. As noted by various indie developers in the past, competing for attention on Steam against such requested sequels is an almost impossible mission.
According to SteamDB metrics, Subnautica 2 is currently dominating Steam's most wishlisted charts. While Outbound is holding strong in the top 20, both fall under the survival genre. Even though one is about underwater tension and the other is a relaxing road trip, they share a massive chunk of the same player base.

In a recent community update, the folks at Square Glade Games made it clear: it's not worth picking a fight with a leviathan. By bringing Outbound’s release forward to May 11 for PC, Xbox Series, and Xbox One, they are letting players start their road trip a bit earlier.
Interestingly, for those waiting to play it on PS5, Switch, or the upcoming Switch 2, the original May 14 date remains intact. Since Subnautica 2's early access isn't hitting those consoles right now, there's no danger of the spotlight being dragged down into the ocean depths.
At the end of the day, gamers are the real winners. We get the chance to chill out and customize our camper in Outbound before dealing with the terrors waiting for us underwater.
