The Town Hall 18 (TH18) introduces one of the most significant changes to the defensive system in Clash of Clans. At this level, the Town Hall no longer has its own weapon and instead relies on a Guardian, a selectable defensive unit that defines how the core of the base behaves.

Choosing between Smasher and Longshot means adopting a different defensive approach, which directly impacts performance against various types of attacks.
At TH18, Guardians completely replace the Town Hall’s weapon. Only one can be active at a time, and its role is to protect the central area of the village.
Unlike other defenses, these Guardians are not static structures. They act as active units that patrol around the Town Hall and automatically attack when enemy troops enter their range.
The Smasher Guardian is designed for close-range combat. Its goal is to withstand, slow down, and punish enemy troops when they reach the center of the base. Its short-range attack includes area damage, allowing it to hit multiple units at once.

This means that even after being eliminated, it continues to provide defensive value. It is most effective in closed bases or compact cores, where enemy troops are forced into high-pressure zones.
The Longshot Guardian takes a different approach, focusing on long-range attacks. Its main role is to weaken troops before they reach the core. It deals area damage and has extended range, allowing it to attack from safer positions.
This behavior makes it an effective option against mass attacks or strategies based on grouped troop deployments.
Both Guardians fulfill different roles in defense:
