Minecraft enchantments are an advanced mechanic that allows players to apply magical upgrades to tools, weapons, and armor. These upgrades increase item effectiveness, grant special abilities, or provide additional defenses against various environmental dangers.

Methods of Obtaining and Applying Enchantments

There are three main ways to enchant items in Survival mode:

• Enchanting Table: Requires experience levels and Lapis Lazuli. Its power depends on the number of nearby bookshelves (up to a maximum of 15 to reach level 30).
• Anvil: Allows you to combine an item with an Enchanted Book or merge two items of the same type to stack enchantments or increase their level.
• Villager Trading: Librarians can trade specific enchanted books in exchange for emeralds.

List of Enchantments by Category

1. Universal Enchantments

Applicable to most tools, weapons, and armor pieces.

• Unbreaking (III): Increases the effective durability of the item by reducing the chance that durability is consumed when used.
• Mending (I): Restores item durability using collected experience orbs. It is incompatible with the Infinity enchantment on bows.
• Curse of Vanishing (I): The item disappears upon the player's death instead of dropping on the ground.

2. Armor

• Protection (IV): Reduces general damage. It is incompatible with specific protections (Fire, Explosion, Projectile).
• Fire Protection (IV): Reduces damage from fire and lava.
• Feather Falling (IV): (Boots only) Reduces fall damage.
• Respiration (III): (Helmets only) Extends underwater breathing time.
• Aqua Affinity (I): (Helmets only) Increases underwater mining speed.
• Thorns (III): Returns a portion of received damage to the attacker, at the cost of increased durability consumption.
• Frost Walker (II): (Boots only) Freezes water when walking over it. Incompatible with Depth Strider.

3. Melee Weapons (Swords and Axes)

• Sharpness (V): Increases overall damage dealt.
• Smite (V): Increases damage exclusively against undead creatures (Zombies, Skeletons, Wither).
• Fire Aspect (II): Sets the target on fire when hit.
• Looting (III): Increases the quantity and rarity of drops from defeated mobs.
• Sweeping Edge (III): (Swords only) Increases sweep attack damage.

4. Tools (Pickaxes, Shovels, Axes, and Hoes)

• Efficiency (V): Increases mining speed.
• Fortune (III): Increases the number of items dropped from certain blocks (such as diamonds or coal). Incompatible with Silk Touch.
• Silk Touch (I): Allows the block itself to drop in its original form (e.g., obtaining stone instead of cobblestone).

5. Ranged Weapons (Bows and Crossbows)

• Power (V): Increases arrow damage.
• Infinity (I): Allows unlimited arrow shots as long as at least one arrow is in the inventory.
• Quick Charge (III): (Crossbows only) Reduces reload time.
• Multishot (I): (Crossbows only) Fires three projectiles at the cost of one.

Anvil Management and Disenchanting

Using the anvil involves a "prior work penalty." Each time an item is modified, the experience level cost for the next upgrade increases. If the cost exceeds 39 levels, the anvil will display the message "Too Expensive" and will not allow further modifications.

To remove enchantments, the Grindstone is used. This process removes all enchantments (except curses) and returns a small portion of the experience invested to the player.
