Sony Interactive Entertainment has registered a patent for the “Ghost Player”, an artificial intelligence capable of taking control of the video game at any moment. The idea is that the player can hand over the controller when facing a level that is too complex or gets stuck, allowing the AI to progress on their behalf.
Unlike traditional aids, this system does not offer cheats or invincibility: it plays by following the rules of the title, analyzing the user’s style and drawing on data from thousands of playthroughs to execute the best strategy.

The patent describes a system that is trained using online gameplay clips and PlayStation Network data to train the AI. The Ghost Player can identify the exact scenario in which the player is stuck and perform the most appropriate action.
This concept is presented as an evolution of the PS5 Game Help function, which currently offers guides in text or video, but now with dynamic and practical assistance.

The Ghost Player opens a deep debate about the future of gaming: to what extent do we want the machine to play for us? On one hand, it represents progress in accessibility and convenience, offering support in moments of frustration. On the other, it raises questions about the very essence of video games: the satisfaction of overcoming a challenge with our own skills.
Perhaps the key lies in balance: the AI should not replace the experience, but rather become a copilot that accompanies us when we need it, without taking away the thrill of being the protagonist of our own journey.
The true challenge of gaming will always be enjoying the journey, not just reaching the end
