The music streaming industry has reached a turning point where algorithmic production capacity has outpaced the speed of human curation. Over the past year, platforms have had to remove more than 75 million tracks generated by AI, yet the problem persists. Spotify, the market leader, has chosen to implement an artist verification system to combat synthetic noise, though this approach raises questions about equity and transparency in the digital age.
The core of the conflict is not the existence of AI as a creative tool, but its mass use to flood music libraries and capture royalties that would otherwise go to human musicians. With Apple Music admitting that a third of its daily uploads are of artificial origin, the distinction between the creator and the automated process becomes vital for the economic sustainability of the sector.
Spotify has opted for a verification badge system. To obtain this "authenticity" seal, an artist must demonstrate a tangible presence: concerts, organic social media activity, and a real fan base. However, this method shifts the burden of proof. Instead of identifying AI-generated content (as Deezer does), Spotify forces humans to prove their nature through commercial relevance metrics.
This decision leaves independent and emerging artists in a vulnerable position. A musician recording in their bedroom without an aggressive marketing strategy or a live event schedule could be flagged by the system as "unverified," losing traction against synthetic profiles that, paradoxically, can simulate social activity using other AI agents.
The structural problem lies in the proportional revenue distribution. Every time a song generated by tools like Suno or Udio accumulates streams, the royalty pool is fragmented. According to Deezer data, 44% of daily uploads correspond to AI content, and most concerningly: in blind listening tests, 97% of users cannot tell the difference. Without a filter button or a clear label, the listener consumes synthetic content without knowing they are diluting the livelihood of traditional artists.
The adoption of detection technologies should not be seen as an act of censorship, but as an exercise in editorial transparency. If AI learns from catalogs created by humans over decades, there is an ethical responsibility to protect the value of original authorship. Implementing a button that allows users to decide whether they want to include synthetic content in their recommendations would be the most honest step toward a balanced coexistence between technology and human expression.
Technology should not be a wall that hides human talent, but a framework that empowers and protects it.
