International Day of Play

UNICEF Has a Message for Everyone Who Thinks Playing Is a Waste of Time

On June 11, the International Day of Play reminds us of something important: play is not a luxury, it's a necessity.

For years, we've heard the same phrase: "stop playing and do something productive."

But it turns out that science, education experts, and even the United Nations think exactly the opposite.

Every June 11, the International Day of Play is celebrated around the world. Led by UNICEF, UNESCO, and the United Nations, the initiative aims to remind us of something many people forget: play is a fundamental right for every child.

And this year, the message is stronger than ever.

Protect Play, Protect Childhood

This year's theme is:

"Protect Play, Protect Childhood"

The campaign raises awareness about a growing problem worldwide: children have less time, fewer spaces, and fewer opportunities to engage in free play.

Academic pressure, increasingly crowded cities, lack of safe public spaces, traffic, pollution, and overscheduled routines are all reducing one of the most important elements of childhood development: play.

Why Is Play So Important?

Because play is much more than entertainment.

According to UNICEF, play helps children develop creativity, resilience, social skills, problem-solving abilities, and learning capacity. These are skills that stay with us throughout our lives.

Through play, we learn how to collaborate, compete, communicate, adapt, and overcome challenges.

In other words, many of the skills we consider essential for work, education, and adulthood begin through play.

Protect Play, Protect Childhood

A Right Recognized by the United Nations

The importance of play is not simply an expert recommendation.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child explicitly recognizes every child's right to rest, leisure, recreational activities, and play.

That is why, in March 2024, the United Nations General Assembly officially established the International Day of Play, making June 11 a global day dedicated to protecting and promoting this right. More than 140 countries supported the initiative.

What Does This Have to Do With Video Games?

More than you might think.

When we talk about play, people often focus only on parks, sports, and toys.

But for millions of young people, a significant part of their social experiences takes place inside video games.

That's where they make friends, work as a team, learn strategies, develop leadership skills, and build communities.

That doesn't mean every minute spent in front of a screen is automatically positive. But it does mean the conversation can no longer be about whether children should play or not.

The real question is:

How do we create play experiences that are healthy, safe, and meaningful?

It's a discussion that now involves families, schools, governments, technology companies, and the gaming industry as a whole.

Play Remains One of the Most Powerful Ways to Learn

As the world becomes increasingly digital, UNICEF continues to emphasize that play remains a basic human need. Whether it happens on a soccer field, in a playground, around a table, or inside a video game, play matters.

Because play is not wasted time.

It's one of the most important ways we learn how to live.

And maybe it's time we started taking it as seriously as the United Nations does.
