Choosing the right first characters in DCKO can make learning the combat system much easier. Although the game allows players to form teams with heroes and villains from across the DC universe, some characters stand out from the beginning thanks to their more intuitive combos, better tools for controlling fights, or easier synergy with other teammates.
Batman, Starfire, and Robin are the starting characters, but they do not all offer the same experience. This guide explains which heroes are worth prioritizing, which duos work best, and how to make the most of the first few hours of gameplay.
Unlike other mobile fighting games, DCKO focuses on 2v2 battles, with each match featuring two interchangeable characters. It is not simply about switching fighters when their health is low: assists can extend combos, maintain pressure, and even allow players to perform a Super Tag, a joint attack when both characters have enough energy.

The system combines light attacks through taps, medium and heavy attacks with swipes, grabs to break blocks, and aerial combos. In addition, each character can level up, unlock new Super Moves, and customize part of their playstyle through progression.
If only one character had to be recommended for learning DCKO, it would be Batman.
His main advantage is balance. He has enough speed to chain combos without feeling slow, but also enough damage to punish the opponent's mistakes. His moves also make it easier to practice one of the most important mechanics in the game: switching characters mid-fight to continue the offensive.
He is the type of fighter who works well with practically any teammate, making him useful even as the roster starts to grow.
Players who prefer to constantly apply pressure will find Starfire to be a very accessible option from the beginning.
Her attacks are fast, connect easily, and allow players to maintain the pace of a fight without requiring overly complex execution. This combination makes her one of the best choices for completing the first PvE missions while learning the combo system.
The third starting character is Robin, designed for players who enjoy a faster playstyle.
Although his damage per hit is lower than that of other characters, he makes up for it with excellent mobility and a strong ability to extend attack chains. As players become more familiar with character switching, Robin also becomes a very useful teammate for continuing combos started by heavier characters.
As progression advances and new characters arrive through Promethean Cores, three names stand out from the rest during the first few hours.
Superman brings a completely different profile from the starting characters. His damage is very high, he controls space well, and he is particularly effective at starting combos that can then be continued by a faster teammate.
Wonder Woman, meanwhile, maintains a balance similar to Batman, but with a more durable approach. She is a safe option for players who are still learning when to block, dodge, or switch characters during a longer exchange.
Once combat starts to feel more familiar, Nightwing becomes one of the best additions thanks to his speed, aerial attacks, and ability to maintain pressure after another character opens the combo.
In DCKO, the team matters just as much as the individual character. Some combinations make learning much easier because each member covers the other's weaknesses.
Batman + Starfire is probably the most recommended duo for beginners. Batman provides stability and control, while Starfire maintains constant offensive pressure, making the pair particularly effective in PvE.
Once more characters have been unlocked, Superman + Nightwing offers one of the best offensive synergies: Superman starts the attack and Nightwing extends the combo before the opponent can react.
For players looking for a more balanced playstyle, Wonder Woman + Robin combines good survivability with very safe character switches and easy-to-maintain combos.
During the early stages of progression, the game allows players to expand their team with several characters in addition to the starting trio. The fighters available during this stage include Batman, Robin, and Starfire from the beginning, while Superman, Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Cyborg, Blue Beetle, Catwoman, Zatanna, Bane, Doomsday, and Constantine can be unlocked later, among other members of the initial roster.
During the first few hours, it is best to focus resources on two main characters instead of spreading upgrades across the entire roster. Completing the tutorial helps players learn the basic mechanics, daily Rifts provide consistent resources, and unlocking new Super Moves as soon as possible expands the available combat options.
It is also worth getting used to using assists and character switches from the beginning, as many of the game's strongest combinations rely precisely on this mechanic.
If the goal is to learn all the mechanics without making things too complicated, Batman remains the safest choice thanks to his balance between speed, damage, and ease of chaining combos. Starfire is the best alternative for players who prefer an aggressive style from the first fight, while Robin rewards those who enjoy mobility and fast combos.
As the roster begins to grow, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Nightwing are the additions that provide the most value during early progression, as they offer different tools without requiring an overly steep learning curve.
