Ice caves are one of the new underground biomes that Minecraft is introducing with the latest Game Drop of 2026. Unlike conventional caves, these areas appear beneath cold regions of the Overworld and are mainly made up of packed ice, calcite, and new ice formations.

For now, ice caves are available in Minecraft's test versions, so their features may still change. However, the official information already makes it possible to know where they appear, what resources they contain, what dangers they present, and what new elements can be found inside them.
The main clue for locating an ice cave is to look for low-temperature biomes on the surface. According to Mojang, this new underground biome generates beneath cold areas of the Overworld, so exploring snowy or frozen regions increases the chances of finding one.
At the moment, Mojang has not announced a specific Y coordinate that guarantees finding an ice cave. Therefore, the strategy is to explore beneath cold biomes and pay attention to large cavities containing packed ice and calcite blocks.
The caves can connect with the usual underground generation systems, meaning that a visible entrance from another cave can also lead to them. Generation remains procedural, so not every cold area will necessarily contain an ice cave.
The appearance of these caves is dominated by packed ice and calcite. Large packed ice formations can also appear on both the floor and ceiling, along with patches of snow.
One of the most characteristic elements is the icicles, new formations similar to the stalactites and stalagmites found in dripstone caves. They can generate hanging from the ceiling and also as large ice structures in different areas of the cave.

Create my accountIcicles are not merely decorative. Under certain lighting conditions, they can detach and fall, causing damage to entities underneath them. They can also grow up to five blocks long when pointing downward.
For this reason, moving through an ice cave requires paying attention to both the terrain and the ceiling. Standing directly underneath an icicle formation can become a hazard during exploration.
Ice caves also introduce ice crystals, one of the new blocks associated with the biome. They can appear on packed ice blocks and function as a light source.
In fact, crystals are currently the only natural source of light unique to these caves, as the biome does not generate glow lichen. Their appearance resembles amethyst clusters, and they can be placed in different directions.
This changes how the biome can be explored. Instead of relying solely on torches to illuminate each section, players can use the existing crystals to identify paths and locate the larger areas of the cave.
The crystals can also be obtained for use in builds, although their features may be modified during the development of the update.
Ice caves do not replace regular caves as a source of ores. Ores still generate, but they appear integrated into pockets of stone and deepslate within the biome.
This means that the presence of large amounts of ice does not prevent players from finding mineral resources. When exploring a particularly large cave, it is worth checking the stone and deepslate walls rather than focusing solely on the ice formations.
A particular detail of this biome is that dirt and granite do not generate inside ice caves, while the glow lichen commonly found in other caves is also absent.
Ice caves introduce new risks related to the cold. In addition to the creatures that can normally appear in caves, Strays and Frostbites can also generate in this biome.
The Frostbite is a new zombie variant designed to fight both at range and in melee combat. It can throw ice balls that deal damage and knockback, while its melee attacks can apply the new freezing effect.
This effect progressively makes the player behave as if they were freezing: it reduces jump height, causes a shaking animation, and, if it continues for long enough, begins to deal damage. Leather armor prevents the player from becoming frozen, although it does not prevent the effect from being applied.
Frostbites can also drop ice balls, a new item used in mechanics related to freezing and in certain potion and projectile recipes.
Ice caves combine three elements that distinguish them from other underground biomes: new ice formations, mineral resources, and freezing-related mechanics.
To find one, the key is to explore beneath low-temperature biomes. Once inside, it is advisable to bring tools, food, and enough equipment to fight Frostbites, as well as to pay attention to icicles that can detach and fall.
However, it should be noted that these features currently correspond to the test versions of the 2026 Game Drop. Mojang has stated that these features are still being tested and that players can report bugs and submit feedback during the development of the update.
For now, ice caves represent a new type of underground exploration focused on cold biomes, featuring packed ice, calcite, glowing crystals, icicles, new enemies, and freezing mechanics.
