Nintendo has done it again. As part of the 40th anniversary celebration of Super Mario Bros., the Japanese company officially announced the sequel to its hit animated film: Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie. The reveal came during the September 12, 2025 Nintendo Direct, and since then, the hype has only grown stronger.
The film is set to hit theaters worldwide on April 3, 2026, and in Japan on April 24. The project is once again in the hands of Illumination Studios, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directing, Matthew Fogel writing the screenplay, and Brian Tyler composing the score. The partnership between Nintendo and Universal Pictures remains solid, reinforcing a shared vision that proved its box office power back in 2023.
The voices that won over audiences are back:
While Seth Rogen has yet to be confirmed as Donkey Kong, more surprises in the cast are expected.
The movie draws inspiration from the iconic video game Super Mario Galaxy, released in 2007 for the Wii. That means we can expect planetoids, shifting gravity, cosmic sparkles, and possibly the debut of Rosalina, a key character in the saga. The official teaser shows Mario asleep under a tree in the Mushroom Kingdom, as a butterfly leads him into space—accompanied by the game’s unforgettable soundtrack.
Mario returns. And this time, space won’t be enough.
