The Hunger Games is about to return to theaters with one of the most brutal competitions in Panem's history. The new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, will explore Haymitch Abernathy's youth and feature a Hunger Games tournament with twice as many tributes. Additionally, Lionsgate has confirmed a 3D version that will also be available on Meta's upcoming virtual reality devices.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will arrive in Mexican theaters on November 19, 2026. This sixth installment in the franchise promises to take audiences back to Panem with a story set 24 years before the events involving Katniss Everdeen.
The production is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, published in March 2025, and will feature a character that fans of the franchise know very well: Haymitch Abernathy, who would later become the mentor of Katniss and Peeta.

The new installment will take place during the 50th edition of the Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Unlike regular editions, in which two tributes from each of the 12 districts compete, this tournament will feature 48 participants, twice the usual number.

This means that each district must send four young people into an arena where only one can emerge victorious. The Capitol's decision makes this edition one of the most memorable and brutal in Panem's history.
The story will follow a 16-year-old Haymitch from District 12, who is selected to participate in this edition. Inside the arena, he will form alliances, face numerous dangers, and discover just how far the Capitol is willing to go to maintain its control.
In the original movies, Haymitch Abernathy was portrayed by Woody Harrelson. The character is remembered for his sarcastic personality, struggles with alcohol, and role as mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

In this new adaptation, Joseph Zada will take on the role of young Haymitch. His story will explore the relationships and experiences that transformed him, as well as his confrontation with the rules imposed by the Capitol.
One of the important characters will be Maysilee Donner, played by Mckenna Grace, a District 12 tribute who will play a key role during the competition. The film will also introduce Lenore Dove Baird, portrayed by Whitney Peak, whose relationship with Haymitch will be part of the story's emotional development.
Another major attraction of Sunrise on the Reaping will be the return of Coriolanus Snow, one of the franchise's most important antagonists.
The character will be played by Ralph Fiennes, an actor best known for portraying Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies and for his roles in numerous other film productions.

Unlike the events of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which depicts Snow during his youth, this movie will present the character decades later, when he is already serving as president of Panem.
The cast also includes Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, and Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle.

The film is once again directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously directed several installments in the franchise, including Catching Fire, both parts of Mockingjay, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
One of the latest announcements came on November 2, 2026, when Lionsgate and Meta revealed a collaboration to bring Sunrise on the Reaping to 3D.
The conversion was carried out with the involvement of director Francis Lawrence and visual effects studio DNEG, aiming to provide a more immersive experience during action sequences and battles inside the arena.
The project will not be limited to movie theaters. Following its theatrical release, the film will also be available in 3D for the upcoming Meta VR Glasses, which are scheduled to launch in spring 2027.
These devices promise a 5K-resolution display and support for technologies such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. However, specific details about the film's availability on these devices in each market have yet to be confirmed.
The movie is officially scheduled to arrive in Mexican theaters on Thursday, November 19, 2026, one day before its release in the United States.
In Mexico, distribution will be handled by Corazón Films, and movie theater chains have announced screenings in standard theaters and IMAX. The availability of other special formats will depend on each theater's schedule.
Additionally, Cinépolis and Corazón Films announced a special fan event in Mexico City on November 12. According to information published by Paloma & Nacho, members of the cast will participate in activities related to the film, although details about the guests and venue have yet to be confirmed.
Information about showtimes and screenings can be found on the movie's Cinemex listing.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will reveal a defining chapter in Panem's history and provide a deeper understanding of the past of one of the franchise's most important characters.

With 48 tributes, a new cast, the return of President Snow, and a 3D adaptation, Lionsgate is preparing an installment that aims to combine the spectacle of the Games with the more personal and tragic side of its participants.
With the release just days away, the big question is how the movie will adapt the events of Suzanne Collins' novel and which elements of Haymitch's story will surprise even those who already know his fate.
