On July 30, news broke that drove the D&D and WoW communities crazy: a confirmed collaboration between both companies. At Gen Con 2026, several announcements were made, including two collaborations, one with Star Wars for 2027 and another with World of Warcraft. This article will focus on the latter.

First, before focusing on the news, we need to understand the basics: What are D&D and WoW?

D&D:

Dungeons & Dragons is a role-playing game format in which an adventure is narrated for the players to complete by making their own decisions. The adventures are not easy—they have enemies, story, items, and a background that changes with every game. It is played with a Dungeon Master, who is one of the most important parts of the game, as they narrate the stories, the enemies, and keep the game alive. Without a DM, there would be no D&D. This type of game can be played with two or more players. It is turn-based, so no rushing in—you need miniatures, dice, a game board, and, most importantly, imagination.

World of Warcraft:

WoW is a famous game created by the company Blizzard, which is centered around the world of Azeroth. It is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), featuring elements such as Alliance vs. Horde, two factions that are opposed to each other, dungeons, a deep story that extends into another type of game, the card game Hearthstone.

What's New?

This collaboration brings back the classic experience, listening to its community after 20 years of waiting. Fans of both franchises can look forward to bringing the world of WoW into the world of D&D. You can create more combinations, make your own stories, and create your own characters inspired by the original game. The following additions are included, and I quote from the official website:

  • "13 World of Warcraft® classes: New rules for playing the 13 World of Warcraft® classes, with 9 new and reimagined subclasses and more than 40 specializations."

  • "16 species: Including the new Dracthyr, Draenei, Earthen, Forsaken, Haranir, Mechagnomes, Pandaren, Tauren, Troll, Vulpera, and Worgen."

  • "60+ new spells and 25+ new magic items, including mounts and companion creatures."

  • "50+ new monsters and 30 dungeon boss stat blocks, designed for tabletop play."

  • "7 iconic World of Warcraft® dungeons reimagined for tabletop play, featuring boss encounters worthy of legends."

  • "23 factions with Renown rewards for forging your legacy throughout Azeroth."

Did You Know...?

  • Did you know that D&D is 50 years old?

  • Did you know that WoW didn't start as an MMO? Originally, it was a real-time strategy game similar to Age of Empires.

  • Did you know that D&D made it to the big screen in 2000 and 2023? In 2000, it performed poorly, but in 2023 it was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

  • Did you know that WoW broke sales records in 2000? It had more than 12 million subscribers, an achievement that only a few MMOs have reached.

  • Did you know that WoW won the 2004 Game of the Year award and received many recognitions in the RPG and MMO genres?

  • Did you know that if you pre-order the game, you'll be able to get the content on November 3 instead of November 17?
