Unlike current trends focused on aesthetic microtransactions, Rockstar Games designed a system where outfits directly influence gameplay. In this guide, we review all Red Dead Redemption outfits, the requirements to unlock them, and the abilities they provide to John Marston.

How Red Dead Redemption Outfits and Accessories Work

Each outfit reflects Wild West era fashion and grants you tactical bonuses. To craft most of them, you will have to perform an initial action to unlock the design and then collect several specific fabrics or scraps.

Additionally, you can equip standalone accessories like the bandana. This item allows you to commit crimes without losing honor at the usual rate, making it easy to combine effects depending on your playstyle.

Outfits Required to Complete 100% of the Game

To achieve full progression in the main story, you must obtain these 9 outfits:

1. Elegant Suit

  • How to get it: Buy it directly from the tailor located in Thieves' Landing.
  • Active ability: Allows you to hide cards and cheat during poker games.

2. Bollard Twins Outfit

  • How to get it: Search the body of a gang member after the mission Justice in Pike's Basin and gather its 6 corresponding scraps.
  • Active ability: Members of the Bollard gang consider you an ally and will not attack you.

3. Treasure Hunter Outfit

  • How to get it: Search the body of a treasure hunter and collect the scraps listed in the menu.
  • Active ability: Grants neutrality against treasure hunters, preventing their ambushes.

4. Bandito Outfit

  • How to get it: Unlock it by searching a bandito and find the rest of its scraps.
  • Active ability: Banditos mistake you for one of their own and cease to be hostile.

5. U.S. Marshal Outfit

  • How to get it: Complete the main story and clear all gang hideouts within a single in-game day.
  • Active ability: Immunity from law enforcement inside U.S. territory.

6. Mexican Poncho

  • How to get it: Purchase any safehouse property in the region of Mexico.
  • Active ability: Grants no tactical benefit. Also available in the Undead Nightmare DLC.

7. Reyes' Rebels Outfit

  • How to get it: Complete the main story mission An Appointed Time and gather the remaining scraps.
  • Active ability: The Mexican army ignores your presence and does not pursue you.

8. Rancher Outfit

  • How to get it: Automatically unlocks upon completing the mission The Outlaw's Return.

  • Active ability: Allows you to pass yourself off as a U.S. Army soldier. Also appears in Undead Nightmare.

Optional Red Dead Redemption Outfits and Special Rewards

These outfits are not required to complete 100% of the story, but they offer powerful advantages or serve as recognition for your achievements:

  • Cowboy Outfit: Default clothing you start the adventure with. Grants no abilities and is available in Undead Nightmare.

  • Duster Coat: Unlocks upon reaching the "Peacemaker" honor level. Its only effect is reducing the accumulation of dirt on your clothes.

  • Bureau Uniform: The ultimate reward after reaching 100% game completion. Allows you to commit any crime without being pursued or judged by law enforcement.

  • Legend of the West Outfit: Obtained by completing level 10 of all ambient challenges. Drastically increases the regeneration rate of the Dead Eye bar.

Exclusive Outfits from the Undead Nightmare Expansion

The zombie-themed DLC includes unique outfits designed specifically for surviving the apocalypse:

  • Pajamas: Available from the start or DLC exclusive depending on the mode. It is a comical sleeping outfit that provides no abilities.
  • Zombie Hunter: Obtained after locating the 6 scraps scattered throughout the expansion. Includes no bonuses.
  • Apocalypse Outfit: Requires reaching rank 5 in all zombie challenges. Grants no additional effects.
  • Undead John Marston: Unlocked as a reward for completing the final mission of the undead storyline. No active ability.
