The Witcher 3 Remastered Announced: Free Upgrade & Release Date

CD Projekt Red closed the Gamescom Opening Night Live event with a key announcement for fans of the franchise. The company officially confirmed the development of The Witcher 3 Remastered, an enhanced version set to launch on September 29, 2026.

This release will be available as a completely free upgrade for all users who already own the original title on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Main Features and Improvements in The Witcher 3 Remastered

The remastered version introduces an extensive list of technical optimizations and gameplay mechanics adjustments to refresh the user experience:

• Mechanics and Combat: Combat system tweaks, improved traversal, revamped mount handling, optimized monster behavior, and a redesigned skill tree.
• Customization and UI: Armor transmogrification (transmog), expanded photo mode, new finishers, new quest tracking, immersive meditation, and a revised looting system.
• Mod Support: Addition of the long-awaited cross-platform mod support and tutorial modernization.
• Technical and Graphics Section: Support for PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Play Anywhere, Nvidia DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, and Intel XeSS 2.0. On PC, it will include path tracing, ray reconstruction, native DX12 rendering, and ray-traced hair technology.

Availability on Nintendo Switch 2 and Arrival on Battle.net

The release of The Witcher 3 Remastered expands the title's reach to new platforms and digital storefronts:

The game will arrive on PC via Battle.net for the first time. Purchasing on this store will unlock a Geralt-themed skin to use in Diablo 4.

On Nintendo consoles, the current Switch version will not receive the upgrade. Instead, the company will sell a native edition for Nintendo Switch 2 featuring exclusive functions. Owners of the original Switch version will be able to claim this new version at no cost.

Free Expansions and Release Window for The Witcher 4

Starting today, both the current base game and the remastered version include access to the first two expansions at no extra cost. This content precedes the launch of Songs of the Past, the title's third expansion scheduled for 2027, which will add more content to the Gwent card minigame.

For his part, CD Projekt Red Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski shared updates regarding the development of the main sequel:

• Protagonist: The story of The Witcher 4 will feature Ciri as the main character.
• Development Team: More than 500 developers are currently working on the project.
• Release Window: The company formally set the release window for The Witcher 4 for the year 2028.
