Ubisoft has shared new details about the development of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, the modernized version of the 2013 classic now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In an interview, lead producer Justin Ng explained how the team updated the game's technology without changing the story or Edward Kenway's identity.

The goal was never to remake Black Flag from scratch, but to deliver a smoother experience designed for modern hardware while preserving the elements that made it one of the franchise's most beloved entries.

Edward Kenway's story remains the priority

According to Justin Ng, preserving Edward Kenway's journey was the team's most important objective throughout development.

Rather than changing the narrative, Ubisoft focused on improving gameplay elements that players criticized in the original release, including overly punishing fail conditions in certain missions and the inability to crouch freely in every situation.

The result aims to provide a more modern experience without altering the heart of Black Flag.

A seamless Caribbean with no loading screens

One of the biggest technical improvements comes from the latest version of the Anvil engine, the same technology used in Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Thanks to this engine, Ubisoft removed loading screens when docking at major cities and ports. The Caribbean now functions as one seamless world where players can sail and dock without interruptions.

The studio also increased world density and visual detail while maintaining solid performance.

Naval combat has also been rebuilt

Naval battles, one of the original game's defining features, received major improvements.

Highlights include:

  • A new visual system to indicate wind direction.
  • More realistic ocean simulation.
  • Completely rebuilt ship models.
  • Dynamic sails, ropes, and crew animations.
  • Enhanced explosions, cannon fire, and water effects.

Ubisoft says one of the biggest technical challenges was maintaining stable performance while all these systems operate simultaneously.

Enhanced lighting and graphics with Anvil

The development team also used the latest rendering technologies to modernize the game's visuals.

Among the improvements are:

  • Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI).
  • Ray-traced reflections.
  • Micropolygon technology for higher geometric detail.
  • Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials.
  • Improved water, foam, and wave simulation.

Interestingly, Ubisoft revealed that it intentionally exaggerated the turquoise color of the sea to better match how players remember the original Black Flag.

More freedom without losing the original spirit

Beyond the technical upgrades, Resynced also introduces quality-of-life improvements designed to reduce player frustration.

Tailing missions have been redesigned to avoid immediate desynchronization, and new recruitable officers with their own questlines expand the pirate experience.

According to Justin Ng, the goal was to reinforce the sense of freedom that has always defined Black Flag, both in exploration and storytelling.

A tribute to the original Black Flag

Ubisoft says it worked alongside original developers Jean Guesdon and Darby McDevitt to ensure all new content remained faithful to Black Flag's original vision.

Rather than reinventing the game, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced aims to become the definitive version of the classic, taking advantage of modern hardware while preserving everything that made Edward Kenway's adventure one of the franchise's most memorable.
