LoL Classic is bringing back more than just champions with their original abilities, old runes, and masteries. It is also restoring one of the features veteran players remember most: the item shop from the game's early seasons. Riot Games has confirmed the return of numerous items that disappeared from modern League of Legends after years of updates and redesigns.

Many of these items defined the game's meta between 2009 and 2013 thanks to their unique stats, passive effects, and active abilities that no longer exist today. Here are some of the most iconic items making their return in LoL Classic.

Deathfire Grasp (DFG)

If there is one item that represents classic League of Legends, it is Deathfire Grasp.

Its active ability dealt damage based on the target's maximum health while also increasing the magic damage they received for a few seconds. This allowed burst mages such as Ahri, Veigar, Annie, and LeBlanc to eliminate an enemy almost instantly with a single spell combo.

Because of its overwhelming burst potential, Riot eventually removed it from the modern game. However, it will return in LoL Classic as one of the most recognizable items from that era.

Garra ESP

Atma's Impaler

Before Mythic items and modern fighter builds existed, many champions paired Warmog's Armor with Atma's Impaler.

This item converted a percentage of the champion's maximum health into Attack Damage, allowing high-health champions to deal considerable damage. It became a core purchase for champions like Dr. Mundo, Volibear, and Udyr during the game's early seasons.

Over time, Riot concluded that this interaction made balancing damage and durability too difficult, leading to the item's removal.

Force of Nature

Although an item with the same name exists today, Force of Nature in LoL Classic is the original version.

Instead of the modern design, it provided a massive amount of Magic Resist, health regeneration, and movement speed. It was a common purchase for tanks looking to survive against teams with heavy magic damage.

Its functionality is very different from the current version of the item, as it belonged to a completely different item system.

Heart of Gold

One of the biggest differences between modern League of Legends and the classic version is the game's economy.

Heart of Gold granted passive gold generation every few seconds while also providing additional health. It was widely used by supports and tanks to remain relevant without relying solely on farming minions or securing kills.

This type of item disappeared when Riot redesigned the support economy and introduced the starting support item system used today.

Philosopher's Stone

Alongside Heart of Gold, Philosopher's Stone was one of the most popular gold-generation items during the early seasons.

In addition to passive gold income, it provided health and mana regeneration, making it an almost mandatory purchase for supports at the time.

In LoL Classic, it once again represents the old economy system, which is very different from the one modern players are familiar with.

Wriggle's Lantern

For years, Wriggle's Lantern was one of the most important items for AD junglers.

It combined Armor, Life Steal, and bonus damage against monsters, but its most memorable feature was its active ability, which placed a free ward. This provided a major vision advantage without requiring players to spend extra gold.

Eventually, Riot completely redesigned the jungle and removed the item in favor of newer systems for the role.

Frozen Mallet

Another fan-favorite item is Frozen Mallet.

It provided a large amount of health and Attack Damage, but its biggest strength was that every basic attack applied a slow as long as the champion continued attacking the target.

This turned champions like Gnar, Shyvana, Volibear, and even Vayne into relentless threats during chases.

Its design was eventually removed as Riot sought to reduce the amount of permanent crowd control available through items.

Sword of the Occult

Long before today's snowball reward items, there was Sword of the Occult.

It worked similarly to Mejai's Soulstealer, but for Attack Damage champions. Every kill granted stacks that increased Attack Damage, while dying caused players to lose part of those stacks.

It was an extremely high-risk item that could quickly turn a player into an unstoppable threat or become a wasted investment after a single death.

A Very Different Item Shop from Modern League

The return of these items highlights one of the biggest differences between LoL Classic and modern League of Legends.

Back then, the game featured numerous active items, gold-generation mechanics, stacking systems, and highly specialized item combinations for each role. Over the years, Riot streamlined much of this system to improve game balance and reduce strategies considered problematic.

As a result, players returning to LoL Classic will once again experience builds that disappeared more than a decade ago and helped define some of the community's most memorable seasons. For veteran players, it will be a nostalgic trip, while newer players will finally have the opportunity to experience a very different way of playing League of Legends.
