Review: God of War – Sons of Sparta
By zEmerson Jogos Online
What makes a game feel like “God of War”? Kratos, gods, brutality, cinematic executions, and that Spartan energy that turns every fight into a spectacle. But does God of War: Sons of Sparta truly deliver?
I played it on stream, and here’s a full, no-nonsense breakdown.Story: interesting premise, weak execution The game takes place before the first God of War, when Kratos was not yet the God of War and his family was still alive. The story is framed as Kratos telling tales to his daughter, Calliope.
You experience his youth alongside his brother Deimos. The setup is promising, but the execution falls short. The main quest is to find a missing friend, Vasilis. The real reason? Deimos wants to impress a girl. The story lacks depth and strong character development. Voice acting, especially in Portuguese, is also inconsistent. Overall, it’s serviceable, but forgettable.
Gameplay: the game’s strongest point This is where the game shines. As a metroidvania, it delivers solid progression, exploration, and evolving abilities. Double jump and dash are present and well implemented. The equipment system adds depth: Customizable spear parts Shield buffs Belt with gem-based builds
Olympian Blessings expand gameplay with new mechanics: Slingshot for puzzles Bombs for unlocking paths Magic sword Chakram for mechanisms Healing and mobility tools
One issue: the dodge mechanic is overpowered, making combat less balanced. Still, gameplay carries the experience. Map and exploration: classic metroidvania design The game features 21 interconnected areas.
Content includes: 11 main missions 9 side quests 10 achievements Additional completion content
Exploration is rewarding and well structured.
Graphics and sound: inconsistent The 2D style sparked debate. While sometimes appealing, it lacks consistency. Issues include: Uneven art quality Visual inconsistencies Lack of polish
The soundtrack is average and not memorable. Audio bugs and voice issues also impact the experience. Is it worth playing? If you approach it with balanced expectations, it’s a fun experience, especially for metroidvania fans.
However, it’s not a standout entry in the franchise. Compared to games like Hollow Knight or Ori, it falls short. Even within the God of War series, other titles perform better.
Final score 6.8 / 10
A fun but flawed game with solid gameplay and inconsistent execution.
