With the arrival of Teamfight Tactics Set 18: Enchanted Wilds, Riot Games introduces a new core mechanic called Wisps. This system appears throughout every match and adds extra decision-making opportunities that can change the direction of a composition, improve the economy, or provide temporary combat advantages.

Although inspired by the Charms mechanic from Set 12, Wisps come with several changes designed to make the experience more dynamic and easier to understand. Here's how they work and the impact they have on every match.
Wisps are single-use special effects that periodically appear in the shop during the planning phase. Each one offers a different reward or effect, forcing players to decide whether to spend gold on it or save their resources to buy champions and level up.
Their functionality is simple:
This mechanic constantly challenges players to evaluate whether the immediate benefit is worth the gold investment.
Not all Wisps provide the same effects. Riot Games has divided them into several categories, offering different kinds of advantages depending on the stage of the match.
The main categories include:
These provide temporary buffs for the next battle, such as increased damage, additional durability, or situational combat enhancements.
Some Wisps grant additional resources, allowing players to accelerate their economy or level up earlier than usual.
Certain Wisps can provide item components, consumables, or other rewards related to champion equipment.
Some temporarily modify how the shop works, making it easier to find specific units or generating unique shopping opportunities.
In some cases, Wisps can directly grant champions or provide effects related to available units.
One of the most interesting categories is the Risk Wisps, which offer valuable rewards in exchange for accepting a disadvantage or fulfilling specific conditions. This creates an additional strategic layer throughout the match.
The power of Wisps is not the same from the beginning of the match to the final stages.
During the early rounds, they generally provide modest benefits suitable for building an economy or stabilizing the board. As the game progresses, significantly more powerful Wisps become available, although they usually come at a higher gold cost.
This makes gold management even more important, since overspending early can prevent players from taking advantage of some of the strongest late-game Wisps.
Wisps are an evolution of the Charms mechanic introduced in Magic n' Mayhem (Set 12), but Riot has made several adjustments to improve how they function.
Some of the most important changes include:
The goal is to preserve the strategic variety offered by Charms while reducing some of the complexity they introduced in their original implementation.
Wisps do not function solely as a standalone mechanic. In Set 18, several traits can directly enhance this system.
One of them is Blossom, whose effect upgrades Wisps as players reach specific trait breakpoints. Its benefits include enhanced Wisps, increased appearance frequency, and even additional gold when purchasing them, making it an important tool for certain team compositions.
This adds another strategic layer, as some compositions gain significantly more value from this mechanic than others.
Unlike mechanics focused exclusively on combat, Wisps are designed to introduce economic and tactical decisions in virtually every round.
Players must determine whether to spend gold for an immediate advantage, save resources to reach the next level, or continue searching for the key champion needed to complete their composition.
Thanks to the wide variety of available effects and their continuous appearance throughout the match, every game can unfold differently—even when using the same composition—making Wisps one of the defining mechanics of Teamfight Tactics Set 18: Enchanted Wilds.
